STOP THE NEW PARKING STEALTH TAX
The Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz and the Cabinet are not listening to us. We need you stand up and let them know your views.
London Borough of Newham (LBN) is introducing a new stealth tax on Newham motorists. They are calling it an emissions based charge however:
1. TFL is introducing the ULEZ in 2021 to tackle this very issue and this already places an extra financial burden for residents to comply with.
2. If you are lucky enough, or rich enough, to have access to a private car park or driveway you do not pay the charge.
3. All the motorists who pass through our Borough and pollute our air on roads such as the A406, A13, A12 do not pay the charge. Likewise those polluters upwind in Central London dirty our air but do not pay the charge.
4. The large companies that pollute our air such as the owners of City Airport do not pay the charge.
5. Not only are electric cars currently much more expensive, the vast majority of residents don’t have easy and practical access to charging points. Instead of installing thousands of charging points to help residents upgrade to electric the Council instead is punishing us for not having electric!
6. Nearly 90% of residents told the consultation that we were against the new charge and yet the Mayor is going ahead with this charge anyway. This is despite claiming that she wants “Newham to be beacon of participatory democracy”.
7. Drivers already pay an emission based charge with our road tax!
Please help us convince the Mayor to postpone this stealth tax until a proper democratic consultation has taken place. Please read below and follow the 2 steps, it will take less than 5 minutes of your time.

It is clear that thousands of Newham residents are opposed to this tax and now some councillors are asking for this charge to be paused for the immediate future. Unfortunately the Mayor and Cabinet are refusing to change their mind and listen to the Newham people.
This battle is not over please help by either doing one or all of the following.
1. Copy and paste the letter below and send to all 59 councillors and the Mayor. Please add your name at the bottom. Email addresses below.
2. Encourage every other person in the Borough you know who shares your views on this issue to do the same. Share your views and posts on social media. Encourage friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to sign this petition.

Dear Mayor and Councillors,
Over recent months my fellow residents have written to you all and explained why we feel the new car tax is unjust. We have had no counter arguments from LBN that adequately address the core reasons why this tax is unfair. Neither have we been provided any real evidence that this tax will reduce emissions, especially considering that the introduction of ULEZ in October is likely to do this. No doubt you will try and claim this as your success. Your own Cabinet paper from February 2020 even states “charges are considered insufficient to result in residents getting rid of their only vehicle”.
We know that you recently met to discuss this matter and that 23 brave councillors stood up against this misleading stealth tax. We were saddened and disappointed to note that the vast majority of you who openly support the tax, are on the Mayoral payroll. This is a disgusting reflection on the state of democracy in Newham.
Not only are we angry about having to pay an unfair tax, we are now disillusioned with the state of democracy in our Borough. The Mayor’s election pledge of a “fairer and more consistent parking scheme that is not run as a business and is less expensive” is another broken politicians promise.
Ten thousand voices do matter, despite what some of you might argue. There are many more people who agree with us but may not be aware of the petitions. Yes, clean air is important for all 350,000 citizens of Newham, that is why LBN should install thousands of electric charging points first, not penalise us because we can’t convert to electric vehicles.
I look forward to protesting in public when it is legal to do so and voting in the 2022 election. We stand together with Newham People Power in fighting against this unfair tax.

I don’t understand why I have to pay ULEZ while buying my car permit . I have a polo low emission 2014 . I am a disable as well . Can you explain why so and any exceptions for disabled resident.
Due to the pandemic and furlough we don’t have the finances to but a new vehicle which is much needed for my family of 7
This is completely unaffordable qt this present moment for the residents. I am a carer for my disabled wife and need my own car as well as my wife’s car to do my running around and getting my kids around and also caring for my elderly parents. I oppose these charges as I am paying enough motoring charges already, with all the current restrictions I can hardly drive to places, yet I keep car only for occasional day out for kids.
